What is the difference between a doula and a midwife (hebamme)?

Doulas offer continuous support that starts during pregnancy and carries on through birth and post-partum period. We provide you with the information to feel confident and safe and support you throughout the whole birth, including the change of shifts that might occur among the midwives/doctors.After the birth, doulas will also connect and de-brief on the birth with you, nourish and help you in the early days.Midwives are trained to deal with the technical aspects of birth and will be able to access yours and your baby’s health conditions.Midwives and doulas work together as a team.Doulas do not: monitor heartbeats, make vaginal examinations, gives you medication or any kind of anesthesia, cuts the cord, checks your newborn condition at birth, deals with health problems or complications of any sort.

What is the difference between the support you offer and the one I get from my birth partner?

Labor is dynamic and because it can take some time it is great to have a variety of support. There will be moments when you will want to be alone with your partner. There will be times that he/she might need a rest. There will be times when you really want the gentle presence of another woman. Your partner and I will work as a team to make sure you have the best birth experience. And if there are moments when he/she needs support, I’ll be there for them too.

Do you support all kinds of birth?

Yes. Regardless if you have a natural birth or a cesarean, I’ll be there. Regardless if you go to the hospital, the birthing center or you stay at home, I’ll be there.Regardless if you give birth at 8 weeks or at full term. I’ll be there for you whatever the circumstances are.

Are the costs covered by the health insurance?

Unfortunately, not.

Why should I make this investment?

This is a once in a lifetime experience (even if you have other babies, they will be different). A good birth experience is something you will carry on for life and it is therefore priceless.

What if you are not able to make it to the birth?

In the very unlikely event that you call me too late (less than 2 hours before the birth) or not at all, there is no refund.If for an unforeseeable reason (such as sickness) I am not able to make it to the birth of your child, either you can choose to have a backup doula or I can partly you.
